I'm running fast, trying to escape the chaos that has shrouded my home. I don't notice anything around me, I don't notice the green smudges on the knees of my jeans from where I have fallen many times in the grass nor do I notice the bleeding cut on my cheek when it was sliced on a sharp branch. I haven't even noticed the rain begin to pour until I finally come to a stop in a clearing which opened up to the most serene place I have ever seen.
A stream breaks through the trees at the left side of the clearing, flowing effortlessly behind the abandoned cabin that stood just a few meters ahead of me. There was nothing but beauty here, flowers in bloom and tall grass around the small building. The rain finally catches my attention when I notice my hair clinging to the sides of my neck and the tightness of my shirt. I let out a sigh of relief as I have finally found my home away from home, my own sanctuary devoid of all chaos.
I linger between two large oak trees before finally pushing through and into the clearing, my footsteps light against the wet blades of grass. I stop just before the door to the cabin and knock twice just to be sure no one was there. When I receive no answer, I place my hand on the door knob, debating mentally whether or not I want to escape the rain that streamed down around me. It was so calming, all the tension I had felt when running disappeared with each droplet of water that crashed down onto my body.
After two minutes, I open the door and take a step inside the empty cabin. It smelled of dust and old fire wood. The scent was calming, relaxing even. I walk over and sink down to my knees before the window, staring out into the gray day as the sound of the rain hitting the roof echoed around me, drowning out all thoughts I once had.
Finally, I am at peace with myself and the world. Nothing can bother me now.
